Carly Quisenberry

Born: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Currently live: Honolulu, Hawaii & Palmyra Atoll

Marine Conservation at the University of Hawaii Manoa
Where are you in your career & what do you do?
I’m a Conservation Science Project Manager for The Nature Conservancy Hawaii. I manage a remote research laboratory & station on Palmyra Atoll, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Explore Mother Nature!
Why did you apply to Homeward Bound?
I met the first 2 cohorts when they visited Antarctica and was deeply inspired by their message, passion and sisterhood. I knew that I had to become a part of such an amazing program.
What are you passionate about?
Science, diversity, equity, empowerment and connecting with the natural world.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Manifesting a life where I get to live and work in some of the most remote places on earth.
Is there a time you ever felt marginalized that sparked your passion in gender equality?
Yes, in almost every role in my scientific career. When I finally got a job that I was treated as an equal to my male counterparts, it taught me that it is possible to have healthy productive equitable workplaces for all. That was the moment that sparked my passion to create that type of workspace in every professional role I’m in. I’m currently working on incorporating equity, diversity and inclusion principles into the small island community that I manage.
What’s your favorite part of Homeward Bound so far?
Connecting with other women around the world that share my passions and understand my professional frustrations. It’s been enlightening and extremely helpful to know that there are others trying to also make a difference in their niche of the world and STEMM disciplines.
How would you feel if the boat left Antarctica and you weren’t on it?
Thrilled! I lived in Antarctica for past work and it’s been my favorite place ever to call home.
Describe yourself in three words.
Wholehearted, humanistic & independent.
